Speak x Talk e Say x Tell

Um dos meus alunos me perguntou sobre o uso desses 4 verbos, então vamos entender um pouco mais sobre quando usá-los:

Speak e Talk

Quando um pessoa está dizendo coisas para alguénm, pode-se usar talk ou speak, mas talk é mais comum e speak é um pouco mais literário. Exemplo:

- He talked about his children.

Se as pessoas estiverem conversando, opte sempre pelo talk:

- They spent the whole afeternoon talking about the trip.

Se dissermos que duas pessoas are not speaking significa que elas não estão se falando:

- She is not speaking with her father.

Quando uma criança aprende a falar, usamos talk:

- The little boy could talk when he was two.

Mas, se você disser que pode speak, significa que é capaz de dizer algo em uma situação especial:

- I was too emotioned to speak.

Para dizer que falamos algum idioma, sempre usamos speak:

- We speak Portuguese.

Para pedir para falar com alguém no telefone usamos o speak:

- Can I speak to your mother, please?

Finalmente, sempre que for falar de words (palavras) utilizamos o speak:

- They just spoke a few words.

Tell e Say

Ao reproduzir exatamente o que alguém disse usamos say:

- 'I am really hungry', she said.

Muitas vezes após o verbo say usa-se o that, que é facultativo e frequentemente não é utilizado, principalmente na língua falada:

- He said that he is a student ou He said he is a student

Say é geralmente seguido de: objetos em geral, anything, something, nothing, so, hello and goodbye:

- You have to study - Mom said so.
- We said nothing at the meeting.
- I am goind to say goodbye to Grandpa.

Para contar story, joke, lie ou truth utilize tell:

- He tells jokes for everyone.
- We never told you a lie.

Finalmente, you say something to someone e you tell someone something (usado também quando se quer dar informações a alguém):

- They said hello to their friends.
- My mother told me how to get there.
